SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Norton Utilities for Macintosh 3.2 requires:
• System version 7.0 or later
• 4 Megabytes minimum memory
• Macintosh Plus or later (including Power Macintosh)
_________________________________________
EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
• Booting from CD-ROM - For all new Macintosh models since 1/1/95, and some Macintosh models equipped with factory installed CD-ROM drives, Apple provides CD-based System software only. If you have an internal CD-ROM drive and have an emergency situation or are trying to optimize, start your Macintosh using the System CD-ROM.
To do this, turn on your computer, insert the System CD-ROM and then restart, holding down the "c" key until you see the "Welcome to Macintosh" message. (Refer to your Macintosh Users Guide if necessary). When the Desktop and menu bar are visible, insert your Norton Utilities Emergency Disk to run Norton Disk Doctor, Utilities Disk #1 to run Disk Editor, or Utilities Disk #2 to run Speed Disk.
In most cases, the System CD-ROM includes a file called "Disk Tools.image" which enables you to build a Disk Tools floppy disk (required by Startup Disk Builder). However, the System software configuration for a few of these models such as the Performa 630, does not include this file. In these instances, you will need to start up from the System CD-ROM or call Technical Support at (541) 465-8440.
• Starting up with system enhancements - Some Macintosh enhancement products such as monitor adapter and accelerator boards require system extension or control panel files to function at startup. (Example: the SuperMac Thunder 24 video board. Disks built with Startup Disk Builder will work if you have this video board installed, but you will only have a partial display.) Limited disk space on startup floppies such as the Norton Emergency Disk may not leave room for these companion files. If your Macintosh includes such enhancements, we recommend that you check your manual to determine how to bypass the hardware temporarily, so you can start your Macintosh from a floppy disk.

INSTALLATION
• IMPORTANT: If you've purchased Norton Utilities to help with an existing Emergency and you are attempting to:
- repair or restore a damaged hard disk
or
- recover lost or deleted files on a hard disk
DO NOT INSTALL THE NORTON UTILITIES SOFTWARE YET!
Any new files copied to a troubled disk, or disk containing deleted files can overwrite those you are attempting to recover. Refer to EMERGENCY SITUATIONS above.
• Location of Norton Utilities for Macintosh Files:
The Norton Utilities for Macintosh 3.2 installation places several files on your hard disk. All applications are located in a folder entitled Norton Utilities Folder, which contains a folder called Norton Tools. The items located within the Norton Tools Folder are:
Norton Disk Doctor
Norton Disk Editor
Startup Disk Builder
Norton Fastback
SpeedDisk
Fast Find
Floppier
Norton Expand
Norton Utilities Help
Open UnErase
Open Volume Recover
System Info
TeachText
Benchmark Results Folder
In your Preferences folder (inside the System Folder):
Norton Utilities Preferences folder
In your Apple Menu Items folder (inside the System Folder):
an alias for Fast Find
In your Control Panels folder (inside the System Folder):
FileSaver
DiskLight
In your Extensions folder (inside the System Folder):
Norton Fastback Scheduler
• Differences between Norton Utilities for Macintosh version 2.x and 3.2:
Norton Utilities for Macintosh version 3.2 does not contain the following items that were part of version 2.x:
Directory Assistance II (in the Extensions folder)
KeyFinder (in the Apple Menu)
Layout Plus (in the Apple Menu)
Norton Backup
Norton Backup Scheduler (in the Extensions folder)
Norton Partition Extension (in the Extensions folder)
Norton Partition (in the Apple Menu)
Note that if you have these items from 2.x, they need not be removed - they can still be used as before (however we do not recommend using Directory Assistance II or Norton Partition with System software 7.5 or greater).
• Virus Protection - If you use virus protection software other than Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh (version 4.0 or later), disable virus protection before installing the Norton Utilities. This prevents anti-virus warnings from interfering with installation. Remember to turn protection back on after installation.
• Installation problems - If you experience problems during installation, try disabling all system extensions before installing the Norton Utilities. To disable system extensions temporarily, restart your Macintosh while holding down the shift key until you see "Extensions off" in the "Welcome to Macintosh" window. Do not use an extension manager program for the purpose of disabling extensions and INITs. Such programs often move files in order to disable them, which can interfere with installation.
• Installing over older versions - If you have an older version of Norton Utilities installed, only FileSaver and DiskLight files are replaced during installation. All other old Norton Utilities files remain, and you may continue to use them, or delete them, as you wish. Activate the new version of FileSaver during installation to replace old FileSaver files and begin protecting your data with the new version.
• WYSIWYG Menus - If you use WYSIWYG Menus version 4.0 (NOW Software), a large number of disk swaps may be required during installation. To avoid this, restart your Macintosh with extensions disabled before installation, or upgrade to version 4.0.2 of WYSIWYG Menus.
• Thunder 7 - If you use Thunder 7 version 1.5.4 (BaseLine Publishing), a large number of disk swaps may be required during installation. To avoid this, restart your Macintosh with extensions disabled before installation, or upgrade Thunder 7 to version 1.5.5.
• Escapade - The Apple Installer, which is used by the Norton Utilities, conflicts with Escapade. Please disable Escapade before installation.
• Streamlined installation - Since the 3.2 Norton Utilities Emergency Disk can start almost any Macintosh, we've streamlined installation by no longer building custom startup disks during installation. Installing version 3.2 Norton Utilities software on your hard disk is easier and takes less time. Because some models of the Macintosh may again rely upon System Enabler technology (certain models shipping after 12/31/94), you may be requested to create a custom Emergency Disk using Startup Disk Builder.
If you have Macintosh System Software (or MacOS) on compact disk (a System CD-ROM) and an internal CD-ROM drive, try starting the Macintosh from the System CD-ROM. If you can do this, you need not bother with Startup Disk Builder. In any emergency (or to use Speed Disk), simply startup using the System CD-ROM. See EMERGENCY SITUATIONS in this document.

CREATING STARTUP DISKS
If you have an internal CD-ROM drive and a System CD-ROM, you should ALWAYS use them to start your computer in emergency situations. If this is not the case, you will either need to use the generic Emergency Disk that comes with Norton Utilities or Startup Disk Builder to build a custom set of startup disks. Startup floppy disks should be stored in a secure place in case they are ever needed for emergency disk repair.
• Creating custom Emergency Disk - Version 3.2 of the Emergency Disk for Norton Utilities is designed to start most Macintosh computer models (shipping before 12/31/94) having at least one high-density floppy disk drive. You are advised, while installing version 3.2 of the Norton Utilities software, whether to use the generic Emergency Disk or to use Startup Disk Builder to create a custom Emergency Disk. We strongly suggest you make a Norton Disk Doctor/UnErase Startup Disk (NDD Startup Disk) if you were notified to do so during the installation process.
• Norton Disk Editor - In extreme circumstances, catalog information on a hard disk may be corrupted so that only an expert, working manually, can repair the damage. Norton Disk Editor is designed for this purpose. If you call Symantec Technical Support with a serious disk problem, the analyst may have you use the Norton Disk Editor Startup Disk. To do this, either start up your computer with a System CD-ROM (if available), insert Utilities Disk #1 and open Norton Disk Editor; or, use Startup Disk Builder to create a Startup Disk containing the Norton Disk Editor and the files needed to start your Macintosh. We suggest creating this disk BEFORE you need it, immediately after installing Norton Utilities.
• Speed Disk - To optimize your startup hard disk completely, start your Macintosh with a Speed Disk Startup Disk (or use your System CD-ROM and Utilities Disk #2 - see above.). Startup Disk Builder allows you to create a Speed Disk Startup Disk, which contains Speed Disk and the files needed to start your Macintosh. See your Norton Utilities manual for detailed instructions.
• The Disk Tools Disk - If your Macintosh came with a System CD-ROM, and you wish to create startup disks, locate the file "Disk Tools.image" on the CD and use it to make a Disk Tools disk prior to using Startup Disk Builder. Before utilizing the Disk Tools disk, verify that it will start up your Macintosh. Startup Disk Builder currently cannot create a startup floppy disk for the Performa 52xx, Performa 62xx, Macintosh clones (such as Daystar, Pioneer and Radius; Power Computing clones may give you this option) or PowerPC accelerators (such as Daystar's PowerPro 601). For Performa 52xx and 62xx systems, you will need to use the System CD that comes with the computer to start up. (see above)
• Trouble building startup disk - If you are having problems building a startup disk, restart your Macintosh and hold down the shift key until you see "Extensions off" in the "Welcome to Macintosh" window. Attempt to build a startup disk again.
• Older Macintosh models - Macintosh models II, IIfx, or SE must be equipped with a high-density floppy disk drive (FDHD) to use disks created by Startup Disk Builder. See your Apple reseller for an FDHD upgrade kit if necessary.
• Multiple partitions - If you have more than one hard drive or partition, we recommend that you launch Startup Disk Builder from your startup drive.
• GateKeeper - To use Startup Disk Builder with GateKeeper, users must “Grant Privilege” to Startup Disk Builder to properly create startup disks.

NORTON UTILITIES HELP
• Locating Help file - The first time you use the Norton Utilities Main Menu and choose Norton Utilities Help... from the Help menu, a dialog box asks you to locate the help file. Select the Norton Tools folder, click Open, select Norton Utilities Help, and click Open again.

DISKLIGHT
• CPU - If you use DiskLight and CPU (Connectix), you may observe a conflict that makes the DiskLight icon invisible when CPU is running. To eliminate this problem, upgrade to CPU version 2.0.3 or later and turn off the "Use inverting LCD Saver" feature in the LCD Saver module.
• Global Village FAX - If you use DiskLight and Global Village FAX software, you may observe a conflict that makes FAXes not send. To eliminate this problem, turn off DiskLight.
• ~Aaron - If you use DiskLight and ~Aaron (a Copland-like extension), you may observe a conflict that makes the DiskLight icon disappear.
_________________________________________
FAST FIND
• FolderBolt™ - A conflict existed between FolderBolt™ (Kent Marsh) and Fast Find. This conflict has been resolved by a FolderBolt™ change. Contact Kent Marsh to upgrade to FolderBolt™ Pro.
_________________________________________
FILESAVER
• Restarting after upgrade - If you were using FileSaver under Norton Utilities version 2.0 and install the new FileSaver, the first restart after activation may take longer than usual. This is because the existing FileSaver protection files are converted automatically to the new version.
• Scanning nomenclature - FileSaver and Norton Disk Doctor use different methods to scan disks for damage. If FileSaver suggests that you run Disk Doctor to correct a particular condition, Norton Disk Doctor may report that condition under another name.
• Now Utilities - If you use Now Utilities 5.0x and FileSaver, custom menu icons in the NOW menu will disappear when the trash can is emptied. These icons re-appear when the screen is redrawn (after a folder is opened, for example). Currently the only way to prevent this behavior is to turn off FileSaver.
• DiskLock - If you use DiskLock and FileSaver, set the interval for the FileSaver Prevention scan to be longer than the DiskLock screen saver idle time. Otherwise the DiskLock screen saver will not be activated and will not lock your disk. Alternatively, you can decrease DiskLock idle time.
• Finder Scripting Extension - When using the Finder Scripting Extension and FileSaver, use Finder Scripting Extension 1.2 or greater (available from Apple Computer).

FLOPPIER
• DOS Mounter - Floppier is not compatible with DOS Mounter.
• DOS disks - Floppier will recognize a DOS disk if DOS mounting software is present, but Floppier is not able to make a copy of a DOS disk.

NORTON DISK DOCTOR
NOTE: You should NEVER connect or disconnect SCSI hard drives while running Norton Disk Doctor or Volume Recover - even if you are using special “hot-swappable” drives. Doing so may result in data loss.
• Disk Doctor and Disk Arrays - Norton Disk Doctor operates correctly on disk arrays as long as communication through the SCSI driver software is operating properly. Should the driver software for the array be inoperative for any reason, Disk Doctor will be unable to gather correct information from the drive. Any repairs Disk Doctor performs in such a situation will be suspect. If you are unsure that the driver software for a disk array is working properly, please contact the vendor for the array.
• Rebuilding your Desktop with Disk Doctor - After you rebuild your Desktop using the Norton Disk Doctor, restart your Macintosh. The effects of the Desktop rebuild may not be seen until after a restart. The Desktop Rebuild operation is not available if you start your Macintosh using the NDD Startup Disk or the NUM Emergency disk. This is to ensure that the Desktop is rebuilt in the presence of any INITs that affect file types, such as AutoDoubler. For the same reason, you should not disable extensions prior to using the Disk Doctor’s Desktop Rebuild operation.
• For Powerbook Users - On occasion, when you run Norton Disk Doctor from the Emergency Disk an error message will appear saying that there is not enough memory. A possible solution is to "zap the PRAM". This is accomplished by holding down the command, option, p and r keys on the keyboard while starting up. You should hear the start up tone twice; after which you can release the keys.
• Restoring Finder Comments - After you have restored Finder comments using the Norton Utilities, restart your Macintosh. Restored comments will not appear until after a restart.
• If Major Problems are found - After running Disk Doctor, if the report shows Major Problems have been found, we recommend that you run Disk Doctor again until a "No Problems Found" message is displayed. Sometimes fixing a problem with your disk will reveal deeper problems which will also need repair.

NORTON FASTBACK
• New capability - Norton Fastback now has the ability to backup and restore from a folder which you select. In the main Fastback window, select "Folder..." from the To: menu (or restore via the From: menu) and then select the appropriate folder.
• Norton Backup - Norton Fastback does not read backup files created by Norton Backup (found in version 2.0 of Norton Utilities). To restore backup files created by Norton Backup, you must use Norton Backup.
• Folders located on desktop - Scheduled backups using the Backup to Folder feature will not occur if the folder selected is on the desktop - Fastback will not be able to find the folder selected. Please only select a folder which is on a storage device, not on the desktop.
• Backing up the first time - When using a tape drive with Norton Fastback for the first time, before backing up, turn on Fastback's "Compare After Backup" option to verify that the drive functions properly with Fastback.
• Backing up to floppy disk - When backing up to previously-used floppy disks, turn on the "Verify files after writing" option in Fastback. This option is off by default, to save time during backups. If the floppy disks are new, or recently formatted, you can safely leave verification off.
• Icons - Occasionally, a file restored by Norton Fastback may appear with a "generic" icon. When you double-click the file to open it, the Finder reports that the application is missing or damaged. Usually, the Finder window can be "refreshed" simply by closing the window containing the file and reopening it. This should also restore the file's custom icon.
• Backing up to used tape - Normally, when backing up to a tape that already contains files, your options are to erase the tape, use available space on the tape, or to select specific files for deletion. Certain tape drive mechanisms, however, do not support deletion of selected files. In this case, your options are to either use the remaining free space or to erase the entire tape.
• Hand-Off II - If you use Hand-Off II (Connectix), when the Norton Fastback main window is front-most, the Hand-Off menu may not activate.
• Incompatible extensions - The following extensions from the Macintosh compatible computers made by Pioneer Electronics have been found to be incompatible with Fastback:
CLD Comm
CD Visionã@î\ägí£
CLD Access
Temporarily remove or disable these extensions for proper operation.

SPEED DISK
NOTE: You should NEVER connect or disconnect SCSI hard drives while running Speed Disk - even if you are using special “hot-swappable” drives. Doing so may result in data loss.
• Speed Disk is an extremely safe disk optimizer, but to provide maximum safety for your data, prior to optimization you should:
- Make a complete backup of the data on your drive before optimizing.
- Be sure that SCSI driver software for your drive is the latest version available. If you are uncertain, check with the vendor for your driver software (formatter) or for your hard drive.
- Run Norton Disk Doctor to be sure there are no problems with your drive, and do not optimize until any problems are completely resolved.

SYSTEM INFO
• Radius Rocket accelerator cards - System Info cannot obtain accurate benchmark results on Macintosh computers with a Radius Rocket accelerator card installed. You can still use System Info to generate a system configuration report for a Macintosh system that includes a Rocket.
• RAMDoubler - System Info reports that virtual memory is on when RAMDoubler is active. This is because RAMDoubler uses its own virtual memory scheme to implement RAM doubling. For most accurate test results, disable RAMDoubler before running the tests.
• Large monitors - Large monitors can affect the video ratings in System Info.
• Power Macintosh info - If System Info will test a Power Macintosh only as an "emulated 68020", you may not have the native version of System Info installed. Perform a custom installation of the System Info module, being sure to choose the Power Macintosh version. See the Norton Utilities for Macintosh User's Manual for information on custom installations.
_________________________________________
UNERASE
NOTE: You should NEVER connect or disconnect SCSI hard drives while running UnErase or Volume Recover - even if you are using special “hot-swappable” drives. Doing so may result in data loss.
• TrashBack - If TrashBack (Symantec/Central Point Software) is active, UnErase may predict lower than expected recoverability. For a more accurate recoverability prediction, restart your Macintosh with TrashBack turned off.
• Totaling files - If you total the number of files found during separate “Erased” and “Real” scans with UnErase and compare the total to a single scan for both “Real” and “Erased” files, you may notice a difference. This apparent count discrepancy occurs because UnErase automatically eliminates duplicates of found files.
• MS Word 6.0/Excel 5.0 - Any files recovered using the "MS Word 6.0/Excel 5.0" pattern mask will automatically launch MS Word 6.0 when opened. In order to open a recovered Excel 5.0 file, first launch Excel 5.0. Next select "Open…" from the File menu. When the Open… dialog appears, find the "List Files of Type:" pop-up menu and choose "All Files." Navigate to the Recovered Files folder and select an MS Word 6.0/Excel 5.0 Data file to open. If the file is an Excel 5.0 file, it should open successfully.
_________________________________________
VOLUME RECOVER
NOTE: You should NEVER connect or disconnect SCSI hard drives while running Volume
Recover - even if you are using special “hot-swappable” drives. Doing so may result in data loss.
• Drive 7 - Using a version prior to 3.5 of Drive 7 from Casa Blanca Works will prevent scan recovery by Volume Recover on 5 1/4" magneto-optical cartridges. Please upgrade to version 3.5 or better.
_________________________________________
WIPE INFO
NOTE: You should NEVER connect or disconnect SCSI hard drives while running WipeInfo - even if you are using special “hot-swappable” drives. Doing so may result in data loss.
• Unerase and Wipe Info - After using Wipe Info, UnErase may still locate the names of some wiped files. This may happen because of residual name information that remains in the disk directory structure. Although some names may be located, all data from any wiped file is gone!
• Folders and contents - If you use Wipe Info to wipe a shared folder, the contents of the folder are destroyed, but the folder itself remains.
• Government Wipe - Don't start Wipe Info with the Government Wipe option selected from a floppy disk, if you intend to wipe other floppy disks in the same floppy drive.
_________________________________________
800K NORTON UTILITIES DISK SET
• Startup disks - If you are using an older Macintosh that does not have a 1.4MB floppy drive, you can get Norton Utilities 3.2 on 800K disks. Please note, however, that the size of System 7 prevents the creation of an 800K Norton Utilities Emergency Disk or any other type of Norton Utilities startup disk, even if you are using a Macintosh with a high-density floppy disk drive (FDHD). This is because Startup Disk Builder is designed to work with the file arrangement present on the 1.4MB disk set only. You may not be able to optimize your drive with Speed Disk if you do not have a high-density drive and the 1.4MB disk set.
• PowerPC - Note that 800K disk sets do not include PowerPC native versions of Norton Utilities.
